How to Calculate Shower Tiles

To calculate the total number of tiles required:

  1. Determine the Total Area:
    • Add the area of the shower walls (Length × Height + Width × Height) and the floor (Length × Width).
  2. Calculate Tile Area:
    • Multiply the length and width of a single tile to find its area.
  3. Factor in Wastage:
    • Include a wastage percentage (typically 10–15%) to account for cutting and breakage.
  4. Divide Total Area by Tile Area:
    • This gives you the number of tiles needed.
shower tiles example

Example Calculation:

  • Shower dimensions: Length = 5 ft, Width = 3 ft, Height = 8 ft.
  • Tile size: 12 in × 12 in (1 ft² per tile).
  • Wastage: 10%.

Calculation:

  1. Wall Area:
    2 × [(5 × 8) + (3 × 8)] = 2 × (40 + 24) = 128 ft².
  2. Floor Area:
    5 × 3 = 15 ft².
  3. Total Area:
    128 + 15 = 143 ft².
  4. Tile Requirement (including wastage):
    143 ÷ 1 × 1.1 = 158 tiles.
