How It Works

The Outdoor Lighting Calculator uses a straightforward formula:

\text{Number of Lights Needed} = \frac{\text{Total Lumens Required}}{\text{Lumens Per Light}}
  • Total Lumens Required: This depends on your area size and the desired brightness level in lumens per square meter (lux).
  • Lumens Per Light: The output of a single light fixture, which you can find on its packaging.

For example, let’s say you have a backyard that’s 50 m² and you want a brightness level of 300 lumens per m². Each light produces 800 lumens.

  1. Calculate total lumens:
    50 \, \text{m²} \times 300 \, \text{lm/m²} = 15,000 \, \text{lumens}
  2. Divide by lumens per light:
    \frac{15,000 \, \text{lumens}}{800 \, \text{lumens per light}} = 18.75 \, \text{lights}
  3. Round up:
    You’ll need 19 lights for optimal brightness.
