How to Calculate Lighting Design
Formula:
The number of light fixtures is determined using:
Where:
- Lux Level: The recommended illumination level for the room type (e.g., living room, kitchen).
- Room Area: Length × Width of the room in square feet.
- Bulb Brightness: The lumen output of the light bulb used.
Steps to calculate:
- Measure the length and width of your room.
- Select the room type to determine the recommended lux level.
- Enter the brightness (lumens) of the light bulb you plan to use.
- The calculator will display the required number of light fixtures.
Example: Lighting Calculation for a Living Room
- Room dimensions: 15 ft × 12 ft
- Room type: Living room (Lux Level: 200 lx)
- Bulb brightness: 800 lumens
Calculation:
- Room area = 15 \times 12 = 180 \, \text{sq ft}
- Required lumens = 200 \times 180 = 36,000 \, \text{lumens}
- Number of bulbs = \frac{36,000}{800} = 45 \, \text{bulbs}
You will need 45 light bulbs of 800 lumens each to properly illuminate your living room.
