How to Calculate Window Treatments
Formula
- Fabric Needed (sq ft) = (2 × Window Width × 1.5 × Window Height) ÷ 144
- Rod Length (inches) = Window Width × 1.1 (10% allowance for overhang)
- Measure the width and height of your window in inches or centimeters.
- Select your preferred curtain type (sheer, blackout, or thermal).
- Input the rod width or use the suggested calculation for 10% wider than the window width.
Example Calculation:
You want to hang blackout curtains for a window 48 inches wide and 60 inches tall.
- Input the dimensions:
- Width: 48 inches
- Height: 60 inches
- Choose the curtain type as “Blackout.”
- Calculate:
- Fabric Needed: (2 × 48 × 1.5 × 60) ÷ 144 = 40 sq ft
- Rod Length: 48 × 1.1 = 52.8 inches
You’ll need 40 square feet of blackout fabric and a rod at least 53 inches long.
