How to Calculate Window Treatments

Formula

  • Fabric Needed (sq ft) = (2 × Window Width × 1.5 × Window Height) ÷ 144
  • Rod Length (inches) = Window Width × 1.1 (10% allowance for overhang)
  1. Measure the width and height of your window in inches or centimeters.
  2. Select your preferred curtain type (sheer, blackout, or thermal).
  3. Input the rod width or use the suggested calculation for 10% wider than the window width.

Example Calculation:

You want to hang blackout curtains for a window 48 inches wide and 60 inches tall.

  1. Input the dimensions:
    • Width: 48 inches
    • Height: 60 inches
  2. Choose the curtain type as “Blackout.”
  3. Calculate:
    • Fabric Needed: (2 × 48 × 1.5 × 60) ÷ 144 = 40 sq ft
    • Rod Length: 48 × 1.1 = 52.8 inches

You’ll need 40 square feet of blackout fabric and a rod at least 53 inches long.
